The Brief: You are required to design and build an online identity that can present a portfolio of your creative practice. It is crucial to consider who you might want to view this portfolio and what you want to achieve from it. Think about which design companies and potential employers might be among your users. You will be encouraged to create an experience for the user that expresses your position as a designer/creative but also allows the work to be viewed in a navigable, interactive and online space. The website must also include an 'About Me' section. Although you will be producing an individual website you will be expected to work with a 'buddy' to both support and gain user-feedback. You will need to work fast, attend all workshops and use independent study time effectively
Coding using HTML and CSS to create a digital portfolio.
To learn HTML I completed the recommended exercise on freecodecamp.com over the winter break. These exercises were a good introduction to coding and what challenges I will have to overcome. We had weekly workshops with Mark where we became more familiar with Visual Studio Code and CSS Grid. I also used Firefox Developer to test my website when coding and used the inspector tool to find any quick fixes for faults in my website.
I created a wireframe on figma with all of the content I wanted to put on my website. This was to visualise how it would start to look once implemented into HTML and to have a structure to work towards, instead of going in blind.
I decided to use Nunito Sans as my type face as it is clean, modern and has several suitable variables, allowing me to establish a hierarchy amongst my elements. In regard to colour, I went for a jewel green, silver and grey. I went for a green as I felt it aligned with my love of nature and the silver/ grey complimented the clean look I was going for throughout my website.
This web project was my first time coding. While it was very challenging both from a technical aspect as well as the time span we had to complete it, it has been a fulfilling challenge. The freecodecamp’s online exercises I completed over the christmas break were a good introduction to the process. I found the workshops to be very helpful, as well as coordinating with my buddy for help when needed. I believe it is valuable to have a diverse skill set to narrow down what I want to specialise in the future. While I am satisfied with what I created, coding is not something I want to specialise in going forward.
